NOA Commences Nationwide Ebola Sensitisation Programme

Speaking with Nigerian Tribune at the weekend in Akokwa, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State, during the community’s new yam festival which attracted indigenes from across the country, he said the nationwide sensitisation of local communities on the dreaded disease and insecurity were imperative.

He said NOA community sensitisation will see community mobilisation officers visiting village squares, churches, mosque, markets and other public places to engage members of the public on the subject matter.

Omeri reiterated the need for personal hygiene among the populace, saying the “best cure for Ebola so far is in prevention of the infection.”

The director general, however, assured the community that the federal government is determined to wipe out the disease which was imported by the late Liberian- American, Patrick Saywer.

According to him, only five persons have so far died from the disease in the country while several persons have been certified free despite contact with the index case. He said the containment of the spread of the disease shows that government was capable of securing the wellbeing of the society.

Speaking on insecurity, Omeri solicited the support of all Nigerians in combating insurgency, and assured that the Armed Forces and other security forces were making steady progress to stamp out terrorism in the country.

He also stressed that the local communities and all citizens have a role to play by being security conscious.

Others dignitaries at the event who also gave speeches on the subject matter comprised representative of the Department of State Security, Steve Ajege; Dean of School of Health Technology at Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Professor Ikechi Dozie; Health Desk Officer in NOA, Dr Femi Ayoola and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Imo State on Security, Mr Okechukwu Okorocha.

Meanwhile, despite the federal government swift response to curbing the deadly disease from spreading rapidly across the nation, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused President Jonathan of allegedly failing to stop a rally in his support in Port Harcourt on Saturday, August 30, 2014 despite warning from individuals and groups of the possible spread of Ebola Virus.

It would be recalled that on August 29, 2014, the Rivers state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) blamed the state Governor, Rotimi Amaechi for the spread of Ebola Virus to the state, after Nigeria’s health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu confirmed the first recorded death from Ebola in Port Harcourt. The deceased Dr. Iyke Enemou, who treated ECOWAS diplomat Olu Koye who was already infected with the Ebola Virus Disease died on August 22 in port harcourt after his health deteriorated.
