Nigeria, Largest Internet Market In Africa- – Minister

The Minister of Communication Technology, Dr. Omobola Johnson, yesterday noted that with over 121 million active subscribers, the country’s tele-density has increased to 86.62 percent as against 114.76 million in 2011 and 95.9 million in 2010.

Johnson, who spoke in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during the third regular meeting of the National Council on Communication Technology, said the country had made appreciable progress in the ICT sector and was the largest internet market in Africa.

She said: “With over 121 million active subscribers, the country’s tele-density has increased to 86.62 percent up from 114.76 million in 2011 and 95.9 million in 2010.”

Citing the International Telecommunications Union, ITU, she said as at June 2012, nigeria was home to 48.4 million internet users up from 45 million at the end of 2011.

“The 2012 figure represents 28 percent internet penetration and 29 percent of total internet users in Africa, making nigeria the largest internet market in Africa.

“On ICT in government, in recent ranking of countries in the United Nations e-government index, nigeria moved up 21 places to number 141 and improved her partici-pation cores by 22 points.”
