My Husband Warned Nigeria About Boko Haram – Gani Fawehinmi’s Widow

His wife was talking at the annual three-day memorial programme for the late lawyer and revealed: “I remember that before my husband died, he warned that if we do not consider issues of insecurity in the country, the country will soon begin to experience bomb blast daily.

”Then people castigated him but today, we are in it. I do not think there is no week we did not hear cases of bomb blast. If they had heeded my husband at that time, we would not be experiencing insurgency at the moment. This was one of the issues he raised before his death. Look at the case of the Chibok girls, who were yet to be rescued and several bomb blasts that had occurred in the country.”

She then went forward and blamed the insurgency on President Goodluck Jonathan saying:“I praise the former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, if he was the one still in power, Boko Haram insurgent would have been a thing of the past. The president responded too late on the abduction of the Chibok girls.

When his in-law was kidnapped, the president swung into action. And few days after, his in-law was rescued. It means that the president was not protecting the interest of the country and its citizens. If he cannot do it, he should resign from office and allow another person rule this country. We do not need a sleeping president.”

“Where is this country going? These were some of the things that my late husband fought for before his death. He wanted everyone to be safe in this country; to enjoy their fundamental human rights.

That was why Nigerians are running out of the country because they realized that their life is no longer safe. Wherever we are, we must stand up for the right things. We cannot continue like this. This is the future of the country that is been destroyed. The future Gani Fawehinmis are killed at their tender age. It is sad, She said.

Gani Fawehinmi died on September 5th 2009 and was an outspoken lawyer.

Fawehinmi’s son had also accused Jonathan of gross negligence in his Job as President of the nation, when Boko Haram kidnapped over 150 school girls in Chibok, Borno State.

Mr Fawehinmi advised the Nigerian government led President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the safety of the girls by negotiating with the terrorists in order to save their lives.
