The umbrella body of all managers of sports in the Nigerian media Guild of Sports Editors, has called for the immediate removal of Stephen Keshi as caretaker coach of the Super Eagles following Saturday’s disgraceful loss to Sudan in a 2015 AFCON qualifier n Khartoun.
The body wants the new executive committee of the nigeria football federation to ask Keshi to stay away from the team for the reverse fixture of the AFCON qualifier in Abuja on Wednesday. The press release body’s president , “The Guild feels Keshi should not be honoured with a place on the Super Eagles bench on Wednesday in the reverse fixture after toying with the emotions of over 100 million football loving Nigerians through his unnecessary arrogance, unguarded and sometimes insulting utterances as well as questionable invitation of players.
“We also want the NFF not to re-open contract extension talks with Keshi who seems to have lost the motivation to take the Super Eagles beyond where he has taken the team.”
The body wants the Amaju Pinnick-led NFF to take a holistic look at football development in Nigeria starting with the leagues.
“The success of any football administration depends on how it is able to develop its league to not only provide quality players for the various national teams but also provide employment for millions of Nigerians. “England last won a major tournament some 48 years ago but its FA has developed its league to be the best in the world with millions of job opportunities for its people.”
From Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Manny wrote via sms, “The only good news for me is that Keshi has made the job of the NFF easier. No sane man will be fighting his corner; not even his family. Time to start afresh.”
A.A. Amole, an Ibadan-based lawyer said, “I think diminishing return has set in for Keshi and has run out ideas. Keshi should tell it to the Marines that Kelechi Iheanacho is not yet ready for the Eagles at 18 when coach Vicente Feola featured Pele at the Sweden ’58 World Cup at 17 and Micheal Owen made his World Cup debut for England at about the same age. Is it at 30 that he would be ready for the Eagles? Keshi should eschew sentiments now and feature our best players in the Eagles or quit.”
Abdulmalik Mohammed wrote from Abuja, “Many of us who have watched the declining trend of the team this past three years, the worst happened today (Saturday) when we lost to the supposedly whipping boys in our group, Sudan. We had shouted to the roof top that our team was drifting like a rudderless ship; that our coach has reached his technical limit with the team and that his arrogance was not going to take us anywhere.
